GORGE ROAD NOTES

WOMEN’S DIVISION MEETING.

(From Our Correspondent.)

The monthly meeting of the Gorge Road branch of the Women’s Division was held on Saturday. In the absence of Mrs Manson Mrs Swale presided. The “Best Bloom” competition resulted: Mrs Knight 1, Miss J. Stewart 2, Mrs T. Smith 3. The roll calls, “Suggestions for the third birthday party” and a “Simple pudding recipe,” were well responded to by members. Mrs Carston offered to donate a prize for the birthday which is in August. The competition for the August meeting will be the “Best Potato” and the roll call, “A Verse of Poetry.” Miss Grey and Miss Swale addressed the meeting on the educational week and thanked the branch for giving them the opportunity of attending. Miss J. Stewart moved a vote of thanks to the speakers which was carried by acclamation. Farmers have taken every advantage of the fine weather prevailing for the last week or so. There has been only a slight rainfall. On a number of nights rain fell but only slight showers. There have been quite a few slight frosts also. Most farms look quite fresh for this time of the year but many farmers are short of feed. This winter farmers seem to be devoting more time to the destruction ct’ one of their biggest liabilities, namely rabbits. With the good prices obtainable it is quite a good sideline. Good “bags” were obtained while the floods were on last month, and by reports excellent catches are being obtained by means of poison and traps. At the fortnightly euchre and dance held in aid of the Kapuka Women’s Hockey Club, Mrs Lowe won the ladies’ prize for most points while Mr Cockbum was winner of the men's sections. Music for the dance was supplied by Mr J. Reynolds while Mr P. Kelly was M.C. On Friday afternoon a team from Gorge Road School travelled to Oteramika and played a game of football with a team from Oteramika School. Gorge P.oad ran out winners by 9 points (L. Murdock 3, F. Kenzett 6) to 6. Quite a large crowd were present at the football match on Saturday when Gorge Road were defeated by Seaward Downs by 10 points to nil. The weather was excellent, the day being the best this season. There was very little difference in the teams, but Seaward Downs had, if anything, a slight advantage. Shortly after the commencement of the game an infringement by a Gorge Road player gave Miller a chance to kick a penalty. Play was of a very even nature till half-time, there being no difference in the score. On changing round Gorge Road had the sun at their backs, but lack of finish prevented them from scoring at least three tries. • By fast following up McDonald scored for Seaward Downs and shortly afterwards a Seaward Downs player re-

ceived from a ruck and potted a goal. For Seaward Downs Shaw played a good game, as did Parker and Reid. For Gorge Road W. Holland, J. Holland, T. Kelly and James McCallum played good games. Mr A. Mitchell was referee.

On Saturday night the Gorge Road Football Club held a dance for the benefit of injured players. There was quite a large crowd present. Music was supplied by Mrs Dawson, Mr Moylan, Mr Yeo, Mr Reynolds and Mr Clearwater. Mr J. Stewart was M.C. A wedding of local interest was solemnized in Auckland on July 11, the contracting parties being Malcolm, son of Mr T. Monteath (Gorge Road) and Molly Caskie, daughter of Mr and Mrs Caskie Wainukerau).
