BALFOUR NOTES

SCHOOL RUGBY DISTRICT GAMES (From Our Correspondent.) During the week the Balfour Primary school Rugby team played two matches against district sides. On Tuesday afternoon at Wendonside a match was played with a combined Riversdale-Wendonside team, and resulted in a win for Balfour by six points to three. For the winners D. Grant scored twice, while L. Greer crossed for the combined team. Mr A. Sheffelbein was referee. On Friday afternoon the Lumsden school team visited Balfour and suffered defeat by 20 points to 6. The referee was Mr A. Stewart. D. Grant (4), R. Orr and G. Orr scored for Balfour, Grant converting one try. For Lumsden Paterson kicked a penalty goal and Robb scored. W. Soper, the nuggety Lumsden halfback played an outstanding game, while E. Soper and Paterson both did good work. Robb, Wildey and King were the best of the forwards. In the home backs Grant, K. Stevens and J. Orr were the pick, although Liddell put up a good showing as half. Of the forwards Roy and Orr went well in the loose, while Denton was conspicuous in lineouts. Pipe Band Concert. On Friday evening a concert was staged in the local hall, with the object of raising funds for the Pipe Band. The attendance was large and all the performers received merited applause. The following contributed items: Mr J. McCartney, songs and monologue, Mr N. McPhee, songs; pipe solos. Pipers McLeod (Browns) and E. Greer; quartette, Mrs Greer, Miss M. Rasmussen, Mr A. Rasmussen and Mr D. McGregor; national and fancy dances, Miss M. Campbell (Winton); Highland dances, Misses Tayles and McKay (Riversdale); club swinging, Miss M. Rasmussen; mouth-organ solos, Master M. Dwyer; stetches by Mr E. Wildey. On behalf of the band Mr D. Alexander thanked the audience for their attendance and the performers for their assistance to the band. After supper was handed round the floor was cleared and a short dance held to music by the Jubilee Orchestra. Piper R. Miller was M.C.
