BARMAID FINED

GAMING HOUSE CHARGE. (Per United Press Association ) Christchurch, April 18. The Magistrate, Mr Mosley, in a reserved judgment convicted Helen Gunn, a barmaid in the private bar at Tattersall’s Hotel, on a charge of using the bar as a common gaming house and imposed a fine of £4O and costs. Counsel for Gunn said she had held a license as barmaid for 30 years and had been connected with virtually every leading hotel in the city. She had never been convicted before and was earning a small wage. The conviction would have serious effects for accused as she owned a number of racehorses and would be debarred from going on racecourses. The chief detective said that accused had been carrying on the business for some time and had been warned. Counsel stated an appeal would be lodged. In his- judgment the Magistrate said that in his opinion a considerable amount of betting business had been earned on by accused.
