WALLACE COUNTY
MONTHLY MEETING OF COUNCIL. (From Our Correspondent.) The monthly meeting of the Wallace County Council was held at Otautau yesterday, when the following councillors were present: Messrs John Horrell (chairman), G. Stroud, F, J. Linscott, H. F. Blatch, J. H. Smith, W. B. Hopcroft, W. T. James, W. J. A. McGregor and D. Teviotdale. A special meeting was held to confirm the special order limiting the weight to be carried on the Tuatapere-Clifden-Orawia main highway. Mr Robert Key, Riverton, asked that the member for the riding inspect his road before next year’s estimates were prepared to see if it could be improved before winter. It was resolved that the member and engineer inspect and report. Messrs Murrell Bros., Manapouri, wrote stating that all access to Run 4-,7 was through the Mararoa riding. If the council considered making the road was too costly, they asked for a double cross-over cage across the Waiau. The writers had been offered a heavy cable as used on the Clutha and Kawarau rivers at a reasonable rate, and were prepared to pay a certain amount in cash or to pay a yearly amount as a special rate during their tenancy. They asked that the engineer survey the site and give them the length of cable required. They could then ascertamthe price at which it could be bought pending an agreement with the council. The writers asked that the matter be treated as urgent, as they contemplated building a house on tne rim before winter. It was resolved that Councillors Blatch and Smith (members for the Mararoa and Waiau ridings) and the engineer inspect the locality with power Mr R. Allan, Birchwood, again drew the council’s attention to that part of the west end of the Birchwood-Wairio road from the end of the gravel to his gate, and asked if it was not possible to have it attended to before the winter. It was resolved to make application for a Government grant, £ for £ up to £lOO.
Mr C. G. Reid, Mossbum, wrote resigning his position as ranger for Mararoa riding. It was resolved that the resignation be accepted. The secretary of the Automobile Association wrote drawing attention to the dangerous nature of the approach to Henderson’s Bay along the Rocks road. He stated that the gorse growing on the inside of the road obscured the view and made the road at this point dangerous to traffic. If the council took steps to have the obstruction removed the danger of accidents would be eliminated. It was resolved to request the owners of the property to have the gorse removed. It was resolved that applications be called for the position of dog tax collectors in the Mararoa and Waiau ridings, and also for rangers for Orepuki, Waiau and Mararoa ridings. Mr M. O’Brien appeared before the council and asked that something be done on his road of one and a-half miles leading to his homestead at Sunnyside or to rebate the amount of his rates to be spent on that part of road under the supervision of the county engineer. It was resolved that the member and engineer inspect with power to act. , It was decided that the 10 per cent, penalty be imposed on all rates not paid by March 21. Councillor Teviotdale moved that the following amounts be authorized for expenditure in Otautau riding: Malcolm and Cowie road, maintenance gravelling, £120; Clark road, maintenance gravelling, £4O j Teviotdale road,. maintenance gravelling, £5O; LindsayCalcium road, maintenance gravelling, £100; total, £3lO. The following tenders were let: Formation to grade, etc., cuttings, banks, culverts, gravelling Key to Whare Creek road (Section No. I)—Mr H. J. Gibb, formation £237 13/9, gravel gravelling, Teviotdale road—Mr F. Brunton 2/9. Maintenance gravelling, LindsayCalcium road—Mr F. Brunton 3/-. The engineer (Mr J. G. C. Baker) submitted the following report: There is still a continuance of the dry, warm weather, and no difficulty has been experienced in keeping road surfaces up to their usual condition. The second Dominion traffic census was taken last month, and the figures disclosed confirm my report of September last after the first Dominion traffic census that the number of motor vehicles in this county is now some two and a-half times greater than in 1924. The week during which the tally was taken was not a very good one, and the figures, therefore, were somewhat below what they might have been. The contractor has made a start with the bridge over the Mararoa river on the Mossbum-Mt Nicholas road. Regarding the application for bitumen sealing of the main highway at Tuatapere township, I have looked over this road and have taken a length from the hotel, thence north to the police station, and two-coat sealing of this portion (29 chains) will cost (sealing only) some £450, the council’s share being £ll2 10/-. It would be charged up as follows: Orepuki riding, £B4 7/6; Waiau riding, £2B 2/6. There are other costs additional to the above, such as preparing the road for sealing, but this cannot very well be estimated until the existing road metal has been depthed throughout the length to be sealed. .> The report was adopted.
