ANNUAL PICNIC

RAILWAYS STAFF. On Sunday last the annual railway picnic was held at Colac in beautiful weather, 2027 making the trip by special train from Invercargill and Bluff and 250 by special train from Tuatapere branch. Fruit was handed to all children on the trains on the outward journey and practically every child under 14 received a prize on the beach. On the homeward journey lollies were to have been handed out but someone broke into the committee car at Colac and stole three large tins of sweets and emptied several boxes of fruit. The committee immediately secured peanuts locally and these were handed out and each tiny tot received a windmill. The committee are indebted to all who helped to make the picnic a success and to those who so generously donated prizes. Races on the beach were run all day for the children, Messrs C. H. Belsham, Selwyn and Holland being in charge. The ladies’ committee, Mrs Edwards, Whittington and Holland, dispensed the children’s toys. The adult programme was successfully run off, the winners being as under:— Single Men’s Race, Open. 135 Yards: T. Heads 1, J. Chaplin 2. Single Ladies’ Race, Open. 100 Yards: V. McKenzie 1, F. Denny 2. Married Men’s Race, Open. 100 Yards: N. Metzger 1, J. McKay 2. Lady Visitors’ Race, 75 Yards: S. Green 1, V. McDonald 2. Railwaymen’s Handicap, 135 Yards: F. Longman 1, L. Robertson 2, E. Lawrie 3. Married Ladies’ Race (Railway), 75 Yards: Mrs McKinnon 1, Mrs Walker 2, Mrs Ahnfeldt 3. Railwaymen Under 40 Years, 100 Yards: T. H. Pearson 1, G. Burton 2, R. Eades 3. Railwaymen 40 Years and Over, 75 Yards: G. Gibbs 1, H. Lyons 2, W. Kemball 3. Young Ladies’ Race (16-20 railway only), 100 Yards: D. Longman 1, F. Denny 2. Bandsmen’s Race (m uniform), 75 Yards: E. White 1, T. Fanning 2. Mixed Three-Legged Race, 100 Yards: A. McPhearson and E. McPhearson 1, G. Tait and L. McKenzie 2. ” Committee Ladies’ Race, 50 Yards: Mrs Edwards 1, Mrs Whittington 2, Mrs Holland 3. Committee Men’s Race, 100 Yards: C. Imbs and R. Bell 1 eq., E. Taylor 3. Chain Stepping Competition: T. Dorgan 1, Mrs Hill 2. Competition on Train: Five equal. The officials were as follows: Starter, Mr J. R. Bell; judges, Messrs E. Patterson, D. Corboy, 'J. Burgess; handicappers: Men, Messrs E. J. Taylor, J. J. Finn; ladies, Messrs A. Jamieson, C. Imbs; call stewards, Messrs S. Batchelor, W. Martin, T. Richardson, G. T. Dawson, E. T. Gazzard; in charge prize tent, Mr H. J. Howes; chairman, Mr G. _T. Robertson; vice-secretary, Mr T. Whittington; secretary, Mr T. Clarke; vicechairman, Mr Belsham. Messrs McKinlay and .Parkin dispensed 20 gallons of soft drinks to children on the beach.
