WOOL MARKET
CHRISTCHURCH SALE
DISTINCT FIRMING FOR SUPER CLASSES
LOCAL MILLS OPERATE
(Per United Press Association.)
Christchurch, January 28 The second Christchurch wool sale of this season held to-day was better than expected in the earlier half of the sale. There was a distinct firming for all super wools, compared with the auction in December, and a slight improvement for general classes of fine wools.
An easing tendency developed over the latter half of the sale, but making allowance for this factor, super wools were higher by a half-penny per lb on the December rates, whilst medium classes were slightly better. The healthier tone extended to some extent to coarse wools, which met with a more widespread demand. Local mills practically monopolized the market for the super wools, but the Continental representatives were much more actively in the market for all classes than at last sale.
The top price of the sale was 154 d, secured for both Corriedale and halfbred and a number of lots exceeded the 14d mark.
The offering of 25,000 bales was scarcely up to the average for the January catalogues. Most of the wools carried more dry yolk, owing to the extreme climatic changes during the season.
. Passings vzere about eight or nine per cent, of the offering. Following is the range of values, compared with those ruling at the December sale:—
