RELIEF WORKERS

MONSTER PICNIC. The Picnic Committee set up by the Invercargill Branch of the Relief Workers’ Organization have arrangements well in hand for the monster picnic to be held in Bluff on Saturday, February 2. An anonymous donor, per the Southland Times Company, has made himself responsible for 180 adult and 130 children’s fares to Bluff. It was not originally intended that Duck Creek workers would be able to avail themselves of the concession as their position was considered a little better than the average Scheme 5 worker. However, as the men had been given to understand that registered relief workers could participate in the free tickets, and the men at the Creek are classed as relief workers, the committee’s representative placed the matter before the Times Company and it is suggested that the committee canvass business firms for donations with a view to raising sufficient funds to pay part or all of the fares required to enable the 120 adult and 260 children to attend the picnic. The chairman of the Southland Times Company (Mr William Macalister) has kindly headed this list with a cheque for £2, and the committee feel that by Saturday morning sufficient cash will be raised to enable the 450 adults and 500 children whose names have been forwarded to the office of the organization to attend the picnic. The committee have hopes of presenting an icecream and lollies to every child attending. A lengthy sports programme has been drawn up, and some valuable prizes have been donated by several business firms. The ground at Argyle Park, Bluff, has been booked, and hot water will be provided free. The special train leaves Invercargill at 9.30 aan., leaving Bluff at 6.10 p.m. Tea, sugar and milk will be provided by the committee. It must be, clearly understood that to date Duck Creek workers will be required to pay 1/8 adult and lOd for each child attending, but as stated above 1 the committee are leaving no stone unturned in their efforts to reduce the fares for Duck Creek men and their children, and if sufficient donations can be collected it may not be necessary for the Creek workers to pay their fares.

With reference to the sporting items entries for cycle race (six times round Argyle Park) must be in at the organization office by Friday evening, 8 p.m. Railway tickets will be distributed from office, 10 Tay street, to Scheme 5 workers all day Friday, February 1. Relief workers must produce pink registration book for checking purposes.
