NEW ZEALANDERS WELCOMED. (United Press Assn—Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 8.35 p.m.) Melbourne, January 24. The New Zealand athletes competing in the Centenary Games contests on Saturday and Monday were welcomed to-day by the Lord Mayor (Mr Wales) and the chairman of the _ Centenary Celebrations Council (Sir Harold Gengoult Smith). The New Zealanders have engaged in vigorous work with the English, Scottish, Finnish and inter-State teams. All the New Zealanders greatly impressed in the trials. The high-light of Saturday’s programme will be the mile run in which Craske (England), Barwick (Tasmania), Backhouse (Victoria), McLachlan (New Zealand) and Colman (Victoria), all champions, will meet.
