WORKS EXTENDED

SOUTHLAND BY-PRODUCTS.

NEW BOILER ROOM OPENED.

A most successful function was staged at the Southland Butchers’ By-Products works at Waikiwi yesterday, afternoon, to celebrate the installation of a new boiler and the completion of an accompanying boiler house and chimney stack. Although the boiler had been in use for some weeks the steam was officially turned on to the company’s fellmongery yesterday. At the invitation of the directors there were present at the ceremony a large number of country and city butchers as well as a number of other guests interested in the operations of the company. Promptly at 1.30 p.m., Mr J. L. Hannon, chairman of directors, assembled those present at the boiler house, where Mr W. Cawthorne, the Works Manager, took charge. Mr Cawthorne conducted a tour over the works and explained in detail the various processes through which the raw by-product has to pass. At the end of the inspection, which occupied an hour, the company adjourned to a marquee where light refreshments were served and a short toast list honoured. After the loyal toast Mr Hannon welcomed the guests and took the opportunity of explaining the objects of the company and its value to the retail butchers. He concluded by proposing the toast of “The Visitors.” The following replied: Messrs D. Tweedie (Riverton), H. Johnston (Gore), J. Marshall (Lumsden), Pittaway (on behalf of the New Zealand Railways) and D. Rutledge (a former secretary). The toast of “The Company” was in the hands of Mr A. L. Adamson, the secretary, who gave an interesting sketch of the company’s operations since its inception. Mr Adamson also dealt with the financial and trading difficulties experienced during the slump period. The speaker concluded by wishing the company success in the future. This sentiment was heartily reciprocated by those present—their endorsement of Mr Adamson’s views being supplied by musical honours. The next toast honoured was that of the woolbrokers and stock agents. This was proposed by Mr J. Holland and Mr John Macdonald replied. Mr W. Johnston, a director, proposed the toast of “The Builders.” . He expressed the company’s appreciation for the splendid manner in which the work had been carried out, laying special emphasis on the efforts of Mr R. Whyte, who had constructed the massive foundations of the building. Mr Whyte had triumphed over many difficulties, not the least of which were running water and sand. As a recognition of his valuable aid in supervising the building operations Mr Whyte was presented, by the directors, with a handsome gold watch. It was stated that the value of Mr Whyte’s efforts was to be seen in the quality of the completed work. Mr Whyte suitably replied. Other toasts honoured were The Manager,” Mr W. Cawthorne (proposed by Mr J. Lillico), and “The Chairman and Directors” (proposed by Mr D. Rutledge).
