To the Editor.

Sir,—The criticism levelled at the speed travelled by motorists on the roads near the Rocks is entirely warranted, and it is to be hoped that many of these “speed kings” will adopt a more sensible attitude as a result of it. There are many children running to and fro whose lives are endangered by these reckless drivers. And, sir, while writing on this subject I am of opinion it is time some public attention should be drawn to the totally inadequate provision made there for sanitary conveniences and bathing appointments. To put it mildly, sir, the public sanitary conditions are appalling and it is time the Health Authorities demanded that more adequate protection be given for excursionists, etc. It is a matter of regret that apparently the business houses of the town are more or less unconcerned about the position, but my own observation and inquiries have shown that they attach a great deal of importance to the “outside” business secured as a result of families taking cribs, etc. Then, too, each excursion is responsible for a certain amount of “foreign” capital being left in the town and reciprocity as far as adequate provision for conveniences should surely be expected. It may be said that as some of the excursionists make direct to the Rocks, no business good accrues, but those who remain more than compensate for the relatively small number who go direct. If the Borough Council were alive to its responsiblities I venture to suggest they ought to secure legislation so that the Rocks area could be included in the borough, for the facilities available there are such as many a less fortunate borough rightly envies. Let me say definitely that many excursions are lost to Riverton by the mere fact that suitable conveniences, as I suggest, are not available, and it is up to the citizens of that town—who so
