HOLD-UP ATTEMPTED
BARRICADE ACROSS ROAD. TAXI DRIVES THROUGH. (Per United Press Association.) Greymouth, January 21. A hold-up was, attempted at 3.30 yesterday morning on a lonely road beside the Grey River, near Taylorsville. A taxi-driver, Leslie Halliman, was taking home a passenger when he noticed a dark object on the roadside, but proceeded. Upon returning, however, he met a barricade of timber, also a stone weighing about 56 pounds When he pulled up he heard footsteps approaching behind. To try going around the obstacle would have precipitated the taxi into the river, so Halliman accelerated and cleared the barricade with no more damage than a broken spring. A police search after daybreak failed to find any vestige of the barricade.
