ARRIVAL ON MONQWAI PERRY GLAD TO BE BACK FIRMLY SILENT (Per United Press Association.) Auckland, January 21. Except that he mentioned he was glad to be back in New Zealand and that he was looking forward to the New Zealand championship tournament, F. J. Perry, the world tennis champion, had nothing to . say about ms movements when he arrived in Auckland this afternoon from Sydney by the Monowai. x j On professionalism, film contracts ana his future plans Perry was quietly but firmly silent. To all questions he gave the came answer: “I am glad to be back in New Zealand and I am looking forward to an enjoyable trip.” Three Victorian tennis stars, R. W. Ewin, A. A. Kay and Miss Shirley Whittaker arrived with Perry to take part in the national championships. A popular figure at Stanley street seven years ago, L. G. Knott, who with N. G. Sturt won the New Zealand doubles title in 1928, also arrived from Sydney to play with his old team-mate in the doubles. Waipukurau, January 21. The North Island lawn tennis tournament was concluded at Waipawa this afternoon, when the finals of the handicap events were completed. The men’s handicap singles event was won by Latham, who beat Thorp 9—o. Miss Shand easily won the women s singles, and Misses Artie and Taylor defeated Misses D. Ormond and White in an even match in the final, of the women’s doubles. Hobin and Miss Astle won the combined doubles. WILDING SHIELD. CANTERBURY DEFEATS WELLINGTON. SEVEN MATCHES TO FIVE. (Per United Press Association.) Wellington, January 21. Canterbury, by winning four of the six matches played to-day, won the Wilding Shield for tennis from Wellington on Friday. Canterbury and Wellington had won three matches each, and Canterbury thus won by seven matches to five. A tricky north wind took careful handling, but the standard of tennis was high. The results, with Wellington players mentioned first, are as follows:— Singles—D. G. France lost to C. Angas 5—7, 6—2, 5—7; N. Smith lost to H. A. Barnett 4—6, I—6; R. McL. Ferkins lost to T. Rhodes-Williams 6—B, 6 3, 3—6; N. Bedford beat H. Dymond 6—B, 6-2, 9—7. Doubles—France and Smith lost to Angas and Barnett B—6 4—6, 4-6; Ferkins and Bedford beat Rhodes-Wil-liams and Dymond 7—5, 7—5. WESTERN DISTRICT COMPETITION. (From Our Correspondent.) The B grade matches in the Western District competition are to be resumed on Wednesday, January 23, and the A grade on Saturday, 26th instant.
