WATER IN HOLD
MOTORSHIP WAIPAWA CARGO OF FROZEN CARCASSES HOSE MISPLACED (Per United Press Association.) Auckland, January 20. Owing to water leaking into the No. 2 lower hold of the Shaw, Savill and Albion Company’s motorship Waipawa, about 24,000 carcasses of frozen meat are being transferred from the. hold into the other freezing chambers in the
’tween decks, to ascertain if any damage has been done to the carcasses stowed in the bottom of the hold. The leak into the hold was not due to any defect in the vessel’s construction, but was caused through a freshwater hose being accidentally led into the bilge pipe, instead of into the freshwater tank, with the result that the bilges filled and the water overflowed into the bottom of the lower hold before the mistake was noticed. Since the accident happened waterside workers have been employed unloading the hold and lifting carcasses of meat into the freezing chambers in the ’tween decks in the same hatch. The unloading of the hold will be completed to-morrow. Any carcasses damaged will be sent ashore for reconditioning. The insulation in the bottom of the hold may also be damaged, and necessitate repairs before the hold is reloaded. The Waipawa is the company’s newest motorship, and is on her maiden voyage. The vessel arrived from Wanganui on Wednesday, and was to have sailed on Saturday for Napier and Wellington to complete loading. The accident to the hold is delaying her departure.
