GARSTON NOTES
(From Our Correspondent.)
A farewell social and dance was held in the Garston School on Wednesday night in honour of Mr P. Soper, who is taking up a position with the firm of Wardells in Dunedin. The esteem in which he was held was evinced by the large crowd that attended the function from all parts of the district, and probably the largest number of people gathered together in the school for many years. Mr John Gordon, on behalf of the residents of the district, made a presentation of a wallet of notes as a token of the great esteem in which Mr Soper was held by all and expressed on behalf of the donors sincere regret at the departure of so popular a member of the community. Mr R. Porteous spoke on behalf of the Tennis Club, and Messrs G. Soper (Athol) and A. McCaughan (Kingston) for the Country Pirates Football Club and the Garston Cricket Club respectively. To these clubs, Mr Soper, they said, had been always a tower of strength and an enthusiastic member. Welcome rain has fallen at intervals during the week and terminated in a good downpour last night. Though the heat has been at times oppressive, and on one or two days registered 90 degrees in the shade, the countryside has not suffered to the same extent as on the lower levels. The cultivating of the turnip ground has caused a good deal of extra work on account of dry conditions, so that the rain will do an immense amount of good.
