Seventeen were killed and 41 injured, many gravely, when the DetroitToronto express, travelling at 60 miles an hour, followed an open switch and crashed into an excursion train on a siding seven miles from Hamilton. Three carriages were telescoped. It was difficult to extricate the bodies. Tire crew worked two hours with acetylene torches in an attempt to free a man pinned in a sitting position. Four men and three women were killed in the presence of horrified motorists when a car drove past a danger signal and collided with the Chicago-Montreal express. All were employees of the Chicago Relief Department.
