RAILWAY SMASH
SEVENTEEN PERSONS KILLED. CARRIAGES TELESCOPED. (United Press Assn—Telegraph Copyright.) Vancouver, December 26. Seventeen were killed and 41 injured, many gravely, when the DetroitToronto express, travelling at 60 miles an hour, followed an open switch and crashed into an excursion train on a siding seven miles from Hamilton. Three carriages were telescoped. It was difficult to extricate the bodies. Tire crew worked two hours with acetylene torches in an attempt to free a man pinned in a sitting position. Four men and three women were killed in the presence of horrified motorists when a car drove past a danger signal and collided with the Chicago-Montreal express. All were employees of the Chicago Relief Department.
