SHOPLIFTING CHARGES AGAINST DOMESTIC. SMARTEST TYPE OF CLOTHES. (Per United Press Association.) Christchurch, December 21. An indication of the big task facing the police in their investigation of certain shoplifting charges, was given in the Police Court when it was revealed that 24 hours had been occupied in taking statements from the accused woman. Ellen Marion Mather, aged 32, a domestic servant, who was arrested recently, is alleged to have had in her possession goods worth £3OO. . The woman’s counsel said that if the police were to bring charges relating to all the goods the hearing might occupy five days. Some of the clothes represented fashions extending over many years. The Chief Detective said it was obvious that a woman of accused’s position could not have bought the goods, which included clothes such as. were worn by the smartest women in the Cl The Magistrate, Mr Mosley, said he had seen the clothes, and having been a married man for 30 years, appreciated the value of them. Accused was remanded until January 22.
