IN TOWN AND OUT
NEWS OF THE DAY Child’s Feet Cut. Yesterday afternoon Graham McLeod, aged six, residing with his parents at Dacre, was admitted to the Southland Hospital after having extensively cut his feet with a lawnmower. At midnight he was reported to be progressing as well as could be expected. A Busy Shopping Day. All day yesterday and last evening the principal streets of the city were crowded with busy hosts of shoppers, and retailers and wholesalers experienced a busy time. At night the spirit of Christmas seemed to put the crowds in carnival mood, the efforts of the shopkeepers in arranging bright window displays assisting in this direction. The balmy weather was also responsible for drawing many people out-of-doors. , ,
Impromptu Dives! The Southland Swimming Centre took a party to Otautau on Thursday evening and demonstrated to the local club a considerable variation of swimming and diving styles. These were greatly appreciated by the local club, but what was still more appreciated were impromptu “dives ’ into the river by two prominent local residents. Mr Allan Fisher (chairman of the Otautau Progressive League and president of the Otautau Swimming Club) and Mr A. A. Liddel (chairman of the Town Board) were crossing the river in a punt when it accidentally tipped up, with the result that both were precipitated into the water.
Synthetic Wool. A sample of the material from German synthetic wool has arrived in Invercargill, and local experts are of the opinion that it compares favourably with the genuine article. Its lasting and wearing qualities are of course unknown, but in appearance and texture it closely resembles ordinary material. Under present conditions importation of the cloth made from synthetic wool would not be possible for financial reasons, but the position may in time be different. The sample is on display at H. and J. Smiths, who invite all those interested to examine this product conceived by the scientific mind.
