GIRL GUIDES

SOUTHLAND ASSOCIATION.

ANNUAL MEETING.

The annual meeting was held on Friday, when Dr. M. Gow presided over representatives from most of the local associations. In moving the annual report and balance-sheet (already published), Dr. Gow mentioned that the year had been a good one and it was gratifying to see so many Guiders obtaining their warrants. There had been the usual resignations, but at the same time other Guiders had offered their services, which offers were gratefully accepted. The association regretted the necessity for leave of absence for Mrs J. G. Macdonald,_ but everyone hoped she would be in her old place again next year. It was also a matter of regret that Mesdames Clouston and Reekie had resigned as Commissioners. They had been in the movement for a long time. Dr. Gow stated that she took that opportunity to thank all Commissioners, Guiders and committees for their loyal support during the months she had been acting Provincial Commissioner. Mrs R. S. Mclnnes seconded the adoption of the report and remarked that the commissioners appreciated Dr. Gow’s remarks, but that they realized the extra work Dr. Gow had shouldered and that they were grateful for her help and inspiration. The election of office-bearers were as follows: President: Mrs R. J. Gilmour (re-elected); vice-presidents: Mesdames J. L. McG. Watson, W. T. Hazlett, C. Gilbertson, W. W. Hinchey, H. R. Gibson, Brookesmith, R. M. Gilmour (Winton), J. Campbell (Lumsden), Mac Gibbon (Mataura), T. Campbell (Riversdale), T. R. Abercrombie (Riverton), G. Porteous (Otautau), G. A. Hood (Balfour), Dore (Mossburn), Graham (Gore), Overton (Queenstown), Higgins (Tuatapere), Martin (Ohai); executive committee: Mesdames J. G. Macdonald, M. H. Mitchel, A. C. Ford, G. Fredrick, W. H. Boyes, H. Strang, H. A. Brumby, G. Stevens (Otautau), Sutherland (Mataura), Malcolm (Wyndham), Robertson (Waikaia), Buxton (Ryal Bush), J. R. Hamilton (Winton), W. A. Pascoe (Gore) and all Commissioners, J. Watt (Makarewa); Provincial Secretary and Treasurer: Miss G. Basstian (re-elected); Provincial Equipment Secretary: Mrs H. A. Brumby (re-elected); Provincial Badge Secretary: Mrs M. H. Mitchel (re-elected); auditor, Mx- F. A. Webb (re-elected). Immediately following the annual meeting the executive meeting was held when the following matters were discussed. Dr. M. Gow announced that Mrs R. S. Mclnnes had been appointed Commissioner for Lones for New Zealand and that the appointment was an honour not only to herself, but to Southland. Miss C. Lipscombe was appointed to take charge of Guiders’ Correspondence Training Course and Miss G. McKenzie Captain for the Rally. A letter was received from the Railway Department with regard to trains for the proposed rally at Dunedin on March 16, and it was decided to interview the stationmaster. Conditions for competition for the Gilbertson Scroll were finalized. It was decided that each patrol should send in a nature log book compiled between February and September, 1935, and that each log book must be the work of at least three girls. The Gore Association was asked if it would have the flower show in connection with the Rose Bowl competition in 1935. Gore was willing to do this and the committee would discuss the matter and announce the date at the February meeting. It was also decided that although January 12 was a very unsuitable date, Guides should parade on the day of the visit of H.R.H. the Duke of Gloucester. ■t it, wfe also decided that as at the Exhibition the Gore entry was very close in marks, a special prize be awarded to this company and that the presentation be made next Saturday. A letter of appreciation for the help of the Guides at the Exhibition held in October was received from Mr Dorman.

A donation of £2 2/- for Wharemoana was given by Gore Guides and it was decided to purchase a bell tent for the camp hut with the amount. Votes of thanks were accorded Mrs H. S. Cordery for her great work in connection with camping throughout Southland and to “Big Guide” for her work in connection with the Guide column.
