P. AND O. COMPANY

ANNUAL MEETING. IMPROVEMENT IN POSITION. (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) London, December 5. Sir William Currie, presiding at the annual meeting of the Peninsular and Oriental Shipping Company, owing to the Hon. Alexander Shaw’s serious illness, said that though internal trade had improved the world trade on which shipping depended was still beset with difficulties caused by tariffs, quotas, and uncertain exchanges. The liquid position of the company was over £1,000,000 better than last year, due partly to the sales of shares to William Cory and Son and to a greater extent to an excess of income over expenditure. Shipbuilding was now confined to the Strathmore, which was expected to replace the Mantua in October, 1935. She would be fitted with special chambers for Australian chilled beef. An interesting development had been the success in the carriage of chilled beef from Australia. The experimental stage had now been passed and many ships were landing consignments in excellent condition.
