MOTOR CARS AT BLUFF.
To the Editor.
Sir,—On my visit to Bluff on Wednesday to farewell departing friends, I was much struck by the enthusiasm displayed in the inauguration of the Bluff to Melbourne service after so many years. The Bluff residents rose to the occasion and the music of the Bluff Watersiders’ Band was much appreciated and helped to turn what might have been a sad parting for some, into a happy farewell. The Railway Department provided every facility to enable passengers by rail to reach the Maheno in comfort. The highest praise is also due to the officers of the Union Steam Ship Company for their courtesy to visitors and passengers. The only fly in the ointment appeared to be the lack of conveniences for passengers arriving by car. Cars had to be parked quite a distance from the boat which meant that passengers had to convey their heavy luggage, the best way they could to the boat. One enterprising passenger, who had probably been used to the accommodation provided at northern ports, drove his car to within reasonable distance of the gangway and was reprimanded by a Harbour Board official (although there was no prominent notice in sight to prevent one driving on to the wharf). Many unfavourable comments on the subject were heard as passengers were seen struggling along with heavy luglage such a distance. Wake up, Bluff Harbour Board, and help to make popular the service (which Southland has striven so hard to achieve) by providing the motoring public with facilities which will enable them to reach their boat with at least the minimum of comfort.—l am, etc., “ADVANCE SOUTHLAND.”
