SMALL FINE IMPOSED
PARTICIPATION IN TATTERSALL’S SWEEPSTAKE. (Per United Press Association.) Hastings, November 6. Participation in Tattersall’s sweepstake which is a prohibited lottery in New Zealand cost L. A. Collings a fine of £1 and costs 10/- on a charge laid in the Napier Magistrate’s Court this morning for a breach of the Gaming Act. Mr R. M. Watson, S.M., referring to defendant’s plea that he did not know he was committing a breach of the law said: Ignorance of the law is no excuse. I might point out that the maximum penalty under this section is £lO. Detective Sergeant J. Bickerdike said that defendant made a complaint to the police on August 30 last that his letters had not been reaching the addressee. Investigations were made and subsequently defendant admitted the letters contained Tattersall’s tickets to which he and three others had contributed two shillings each. The Detective Sergeant submitted that defendant did not actually have to possess the ticket to be guilty under the section which provided penalties for participation in prohibited lotteries.
