RURAL RATES

REBATE OF 121 PER CENT.

MOTORISTS’ PROTEST.

(Per United Press Association.)

Wellington, November 5.

The provision for a rebate of 12J percent. on rural rates made by the proposed amendment to the Finance Bill now before Parliament is to be a charge upon the Main Highways revenue fund and representatives of the motoring organizations have made protests against the procedure. Mr A. E. Ansell, M.P., stated that he had discussed the amendment with the Minister of Finance, the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates, who had assured him that the proposal to pay the subsidy from the Main Highways fund did not involve any further diversion of motor taxation to purposes other than roads and that it would be made a charge on the £500,000 already arranged by the legislation to be payable from the proceeds of motor taxation into the consolidated revenue.
