THEFT OF BOOKS

ELECTRICAL INSPECTOR’S ADMISSION.

(Per United Press Association.) Dunedin, November 5. In the Police Court Henry Cecil Beckingsale, aged 34, a City Corporation Electrical Inspector, admitted that in the last two years he had stolen 224 books valued at £6l from various shops, ascribing his conduct to a fondness for books and being unable to resist the temptation of taking them. The police stated that the accused would order periodicals from different shops and call for them with a brief bag. While in the shops he would select the books he intended to steal, move them to the back of the case and then slip them into his bag. All the books were of good quality and of a hign standard. When his home was searched 550 new books were found in his possession. Counsel said that only 224 had been stolen as the accused had a substantial library of his own. He was remanded until the afternoon.
