CENTENARY REGATTA
NEW ZEALAND CREW SECOND IN HEAT. (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 11.5 p.m.) Melbourne, October 28. A fast flood in the Yarrow hampered the great Centenary rowing regatta on Saturday when for the first time in history, a New Zealand eight rowed in Melbourne. Owing to the strong current, the centre of the stream gave an advantage in all heats. The senior eights was won by University who defeated Wanganui in the heat by a quarter of a length, despite the New Zealand crew’s strong finishing effort. It was an impressive performance. Smith, of Waitemata, was second and Abbott, of Petone, first in their respective heats of the handicap sculls. Abbott was defeated by two lengths in the final.
