STORMY WEATHER

A WINTRY WEEK-END. FALLS OF RAIN AND SNOW. After days of pleasant sunshine, the weather in Invercargill underwent a change on Thursday night and over the week-end falls of rain, hail and snow occurred at intervals. A cold wind made conditions out of doors anything but pleasant, and the majority of people elected to spend Saturday and yesterday by their firesides. Falls of snow occurred during the representative Rugby match between Southland and South Canterbury at Rugby Park on Saturday afternoon, while the night was one of the stormiest that has been experienced for some time. Frequent falls of rain, however, speedily melted the snow and kept the streets clear.

Motorists returning from the Otago Hunt Club’s meeting at Dunedin on Saturday night had an unpleasant time, visibility being poor owing to driving rain and snow. Storms were met all the way from Dunedin, no part appearing to escape the visitation. A sudden change occurred at Gore on Friday when after a week of beautiful weather conditions became cold and stormy. Saturday broke very cold and late in the afternoon snow commenced to fall. The Mataura river was running high at Gore on Friday and on Saturday the river was 4ft 4in. above normal.
