LADY BLEDISLOE
FAREWELL BY WOMEN’S ORGANIZATIONS. HIGH TRIBUTES PAID. (Per United Press Association.) Wellington, July 17. Lady Bledisloe was farewelled by a large gathering representing all branches of the women’s social progress movement. The acting-president, Mrs H. D. Bennett, said her Excellency had captured the hearts of New Zealand people, had given an example of the highest and best, and they hoped she would carry away happy memories of her sojourn here. The movement desired its sentiments to be associated with the Maori race and acknowledged her Excellency’s personal share and interest in the famous Waitangi gift. Replying, her Excellency said the movement had her hearty good wishes for success as did anything that made for the happiness and the betterment of women. The status of woman had been forever raised from being a little more than a mere chattel and she had taken her proper place in the world and played her. part in its progress. To-day woman’s power had become enormous and her responsibility tremendous. While holding aloft the banner of progress they should always maintain their womanhood and realize that without a strong belief in the all-important spiritual side of life no real progress to ultimate peace or happiness could ever be attained.
