GORE SOCIAL NOTES

Mrs R. Fisher, Devon street, leaves this week on a visit to Wellington. Mrs Noel Green, Garston, visited Gore during the week and was the guest of Mrs L. A. Bath, Devon street. Mr and Mrs H. Blair-Stewart, Irwell street, left during the week to reside in Riverton. . . Miss E. Burns, Dunedin, visited her parents during the week-end. On Saturday evening Mr and Mrs Burns entertained some 40 guests at an enjoyable dance in honour of their daughter's birthday. At the meeting of the Bridge Circle of the Woman’s Club on Monday evening of last week, the highest score prize for contract was won by Mrs G. C. Hamilton, and the highest score for auction by Miss Ailsa West. Mr and Mrs S. J. Davis, Main South Road, Mataura, have returned from a holiday visit to Australia and Tasmania.

Mrs R. J. Telfer, Pomona street, entertained a number of friends at bridge on Monday afternoon of last week. Mr and Mrs R. Burton, Christchurch, visited Gore last week on their way north.

The members of the Gore Croquet Club held an enjoyable bridge afternoon at the residence of Mrs A. A. MacGibbpn, Main street, on Monday afternoon. The prize for the highest score was won by Mrs Mac Gibbon. Other members playing were Mesdames A. T. Pettigrew, G. McLeod, R. J. Telfer, J. Brown, R. W. McCreath, F. Wallis, J. Ritchie, R. Allison, A. B. Caverhill, R. P. Neale, J. Gardiner, F. Parsons, H. R. Robertson, J. Richards, J. W. Turnbull, H. Barnett, V. Gerken, Miss Inder. The members of the Anglican Tennis Club held an enjoyable social evening in the Paris Hall on Friday, of last week. An interesting debate on “Is the emancipation of woman beneficial?” was held, and the various arguments raised occasioned much amusement. The Rev. C. E. P. Webb Was chairman and Mrs Webb acted as judge. The affirmative was taken by Messrs W. Chatterton, R. Turvey, M. Quilter, and Mrs G. Allison, and the negative by Messrs M. Ussher, R. Proctor, and Misses I. Wilkinson and H. Cuttriss. At the conclusion Mrs Webb announced that the affirmative team had won by the narrow margin of one point. At the next evening a mock civic banquet will be held. The annual dance of the Albion Football Club was held in the Gaiety Hall on Wednesday evening last. Attractive decorations were carried out in the club’s colours, red, black and yellow, and music was supplied by the Troubadours’ Dance Band. The M.C.’s were Messrs W. Chatterton and W. Southern. Amongst those present were Mr and Mrs F. Wallis, junior, Mr and Mrs W. D. Shelton, Mr and Mrs F. Townsend, Mr and Mrs A. Gee, Mr and Mrs H. Mclntyre, Misses J. Harvey, R. Wallis, D. Nicol, A.
