WAIRARAPA AYRSHIRES FOR TASMANIA.

SOUTHLAND BREEDER ALSO PURCHASES.

The success of the imported blood in the Ardgowen Ayrshire stud, owned by Mr J. G. Donald, of Featherston, Wairarapa, has attracted the attention of Tasmanian breeders and Mr Donald has just disposed of a rising yearling bull and an in-calf heifer to Mr Gerald E. Reed, of Lowestoft, North Berridale, Hobart. These high class Ayrshires are being shipped by Messrs Wright, Stephenson and Co., Ltd"., by direct boat this week. The bull, Ardgowan Night Raid, is a very attractively marked white and red animal of show type. He is sired by Avonsyde Star of Fame, one of Mr Donald’s two great imported breeding bulls, and for which he paid the top price of 305 guineas at the sale of imported Ayrshire bulls brought to New Zealand by the New Zealand Ayrshire Breeders’ Association. Avonsyde Star of Fame won the championship for Mr Donald at the Wairarapa Show and has sired prize-winning stock in leading showrings all over the Dominion. His first crop of heifers were in milk this past season and have given exceptional results.

Mr Donald docs not engage, in semiofficial testing but the whole of his herd is under herd test. Many of the Star of Fame heifers have given in the herd of 120 head in milk over 3001 b fat and promise to develop into splendid cows. Avonsyde Star $f Fame was sired in Canada by Alta Crest Air Mail, a son of Lessnessock Searchlight (bred in Scotland) and from Douglas Hall Dandy, a cow also bred in Scotland and which when C.O.R. tested in Canada produced 8091 b butterfat. This record was exceeded by the dam of Avonsyde Star of Fame, as this cow, Rosebank Pride, made the splendid record of 9781 b butterfat, her five consecutive records averaging over 7001 b fat. The dam of the young bull is Ardgowan Starry Night. This heifer was second at the Wairarapa and Royal Shows in the spring and first in the autumn when shown as a yearling at the Masterton Show and as a two-year-old met with excellent success, being first in her class and winning the reserve championship at the Wairarapa Show and was second at the Manawatu Show to Ardgowan Graceful Star, which in the autumn won the Royal Championship. She is a daughter of Thomcroft Star Boy (imp.)) twice in succession Royal Champion and undefeated in the Dominion, and undoubtedly the greatest breeding bull ever imported to New Zealand. He sired the winners of three Royal Championships in his first two crops of calves and in addition to having sired winners and champions of the breed all over the Dominion, his stock have proved capable of winning over all breeds in the strongest dairy classes. At the Hawera Jubilee Show, one of «the greatest dairy shows held in New Zealand, his progeny won over all breeds in three-year-olds, two-year-olds, yearlings (first and second), first for a pair of yearlings and the champion-

ship for a dairy heifer of any age from one year to three years. The combination of breeding behind the young bull in which Mr Donald has crossed the two imported sires, has proven exceptionally successful in the herd. Both the bull and the heifer descend from those great dairy sires, Ivanhoe Dairy King (dam’s record, 7311 b fat at four years, New Zealand record) and Hindsward Jimmie. The heifer, Memory of Fame, which is also sired by Avonsyde Star of Fame (imp.), was second prize as a yearling at the Wairarapa Show, and third both at the Manawatu and Hawera Shows, in each case being beaten by other heifers from Mr Donald’s stud. Memory of Fame, a great bodied heifer of excellent type, is in calf to Mr Donald's last imported sire, the Scotch bred bull, Hobsland Prince of Perfection, whose sire, Netherhall Enterprise, is one of the great breeding bulls of the day, while his dam, Hobsland Lovely 16th. which is also the dam of the undefeated sire, Hobsland Satisfaction, and two other great champions exported to South Africa and the United States, represents probably the most noted family of the breed. These two Ardgowan Ayrshires should prove a splendid advertisement in Tasmania for the breed. Noted Bull for Southland. Mr Donald has also sold to one of Southland’s-leading breeders, Mr T. G. Dobbie, of Edendale, the rising yearling bull Ardgowan Rising Fame. This fine bull is sired by Avonside Star of Fame, while his dam is the great Ayrshire cow, Ardgowan Hazel, which has the following records: 3431 b fat at two years in 233 days, 5301 b fat at three years in 250 days, 7081 b fat at four years in 305 days, 6811 b fat at six years in 299 days and 6301 b fat at seven years in 293 days. These records were all made running with the herd. Ardgowan Hazel is sired by Howie’s Cannie Scot (imp.) while his dam, Howie’s Polly, was also imported. This cow always calved late in the season and was never tested for a full season, but for the month of January she produced 1071 b fat and for 175 days 4171 b fat. Ardgowan Hazel is also the dam of Mr Donald’s noted three-year-old bull, Ardgowan Rising Star, who has been undefeated throughout his showring career and was Royal champion both at two and three years. Mr Dobbie thus secures in a half-brother to this famous Royal champion a bull of extraordinary breeding and high butterfat backing, his four nearest dams having records of 7081 b fat in 305 days. 9781 b fat in 365 davs, 8091 b fat in 365 days and 417 lb fat in 175 days. Backed by such great animals of the breed, Ardgowan. Rising Fame has extraordinary credentials for a great career as a sire. STUD SHEEP SALES. A STRONG MARKET.
