After an uneventful voyage the New Zealand Shipping Company s cargo steamer Hororata arrived at Lyttelton early on Monday morning from London via Suva. Leaving London on May 10. the Hororata had fine weather in the Atlantic and across the Pacific until her arrival at Suva on June 18. General cargo was discharged at Suva and the vessel left again for Lyttelton In the last few days of the voyage a strong southerly head wind was encountered, with a moderately heavy sea. FRENCH SHIPPING. Referring to the serious situation of French shipping in general, the report of the Finance Commission of the French Chamber on the Mercantile Marine budget for 1934 states that on an average 25 per cent, of merchant tonnage has been laid up. The percentage has been higher in particular companies, the Compagnie Generale Transatlantigue being 41)4 per cent, and the Messagerles Marltimes 58 per cent. French coal-carrying shipping has suffered particularly as a result of the depreciation in sterling, and has been unable to compete with Cardiff trade, in spite of substantial reduction in rates. Regret was expressed in the report that it has not been possible to pass a law compelling importing firms to carry at least 50 per cent, of English coal imports in French ships, also that coal contracts should be made on f.o.b. prices British ports, and not, as heretofore, c.i.f. French ports, and to the disadvantage of French shipping. Considerable damage to national shipping is attributed In the report to the protectionist and quota policy introduced by the French Government: and attention Is drawn to the harmful effect caused by the import surtax of 15 per cent., against those countries with depreciated currencies. LONDON'S SHIPPING. During the week ended May 11, 1174 vessels, representing 986,431 net register tons used the Port of London. Five hundred and twenty-seven vessels (787,953 net register tons) were to and from Empire and foreign ports and 647 vessels (198,478 net register tons) were engaged in coastwise traffic. The arrivals included nine meat cargoes, three from Australia, two from New Zealand, one from North America and three from South America, comprising 362,000 carcasses of lamb and mutton. 63,000 quarters of beef, quantities of pork, rabbits and sundries.
