GORE LIBRARY

ANNUAL MEETING. At the annual meeting of subscribers of the Gore Coronation Library on Tuesday night Mr A. T. Newman presided over a small attendance.

In moving the adoption of the annual report and balance-sheet (previously published) the chairman said that it was gratifying to know that the year had ended much more satisfactorily than was anticipated at one stage. Considering the hard times through which the country was going, the number of subscribers (302) was quite satisfactory, although, as pointed out at the meeting of the Borough Council, this was not very large considering the population of the town and district. During the year a visit had been paid by Mr G.'Munns, who had been rather disappointed that Gore did not have a free library and expressed the opinion that every effort should be made to achieve this object. He also stressed the value of building up the children’s section. Unfortunately, there were difficulties in the way. Local bodies were limited by statute to Id in the £ on any particular rating scheme on the capital value, and the Gore Borough was paying right up to this amount at present. It had also been pointed out that there were numerous country subscribers and if the library were to be free these would be securing a benefit at the expense of the townspeople. The visit of Mr Munns had stimulated interest in the library, and he thought it would be advisable to consider every aspect of improving it. Mr E. C. Smith seconded the motion, which was carried. The election of committee resulted: Messrs E. C. Smith, A. L. Dolamore, H. R. Robertson (subscribers’ representatives) and four representatives of the Borough Council. Mr W. Gee was elected auditor. Mr Robertson was re-elected secretary. A plea was put forward by Mr H. Clifford for the introduction of the card system, which, he contended, would do

a tremendous amount towards helping the library along. The matter was left to Mr Clifford to produce some sample cards and place them before the next meeting of the committee.
