OBITUARY

MR BRAND WHITLOCK. (United Press Assn. —Telegraph Copyright.) , Cannes, May 24 Hie death is announced of Mr Brand Whitlock. Mr Brand Witlock, who was born in Ohio, in 1869, had an interesting career. He was a newspaper’ reporter at Toledo from 1887 to 1890, reporter and political correspondent of the Chicago Herald from 1890 to 1893, clerk in the office of the Secretary of State of Illinois from 1893 to 1897, studied law and was admitted to the Bar of Illinois in 1894. He was Mayor of Toledo in 1905, 1907, 1909 and 1911. He was American Minister to Belgium in 1913 and Ambassador from 1919 to 1922. He was a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, a member of the Belgium Royal Academy and a member of the National Institute of Arts and Letters. He was the author of several novels and books of essays. MR MURRAY-PHILIPSON, M.P. The death is announced of Mr Hylton Ralph Murray-Philipson, .Conservative member for the Twickenham Division of Middlesex. He was a prominent industrialist.
