TIMBER IMPORTS

BRITAIN'S TRADE. A CONSIDERABLE INCREASE. (British Official Wireless.) (Rec. 5.5 p.m.) Rugby, May 24. Timber imports to Britain have been considerably increased by activity in the building trade. Nearly 10,000,000 tons of unmanufactured timber valued at about £30,000,000 were imported last year, a rise of 20 per cent, on the previous year and substantial further increases are expected. About 95 per cent, of Britain’s timber supplies come from overseas, mostly from foreign countries. The most extensive area of Empire timber is in Canada. Next comes India with about 300,000 square miles under timber. Nigeria and Gold Coast have about 250,000 square miles of forest, while other great areas are found in British Guiana, Rhodesia, and Australia. In all, the Empire’s forests together are about 40 times greater in area than England and Wales combined.
