DOG TRIALS

THE GREENVALE CLUB A SUCCESSFUL FIXTURE. (From Our Correspondent.) Last Wednesday and Thursday the Greenvale Collie Club held its third annual trials on Mr M. Kirkpatrick’s property when a record number of competitors and spectators were present. Fortunately the weather conditions were good and this, together with the excellent manner in which the officials carried out their duties, made the gathering most successful. The committee wishes to thank the judge, Mr J. McDonald, Tapanui, Mr M. Kirkpatrick for the use of his property, and Messrs Potter Bros, and Mr F. Gutschlag for the use of their sheep for the various events. The results of the trials were as follows :— MAIDEN HEADING. For dogs that have never won a first prize. First, cup donated by Bells, Ltd. Competitor completing course in fastest time in the maiden huntaway.— Mr D. Lawlor. The ladies who attended the trials found plenty of amusement _ in the competitions where Mr W. Hickey left no stone unturned to make them so enjoyable. The results of these competitions were as follows: — First Day.—Guessing matches in bottle, Miss S. McEwan; putting hockey ball, Miss N. Henderson; quoits, Mrs R. Christie; throwing cones in tin, Miss J. Styles; putting ring on hook, Mrs D. Stewart; chain-stepping, Mrs F. Gutschlag. Second Day.—Guessing lengths of string in bottle, Miss S. McEwan; guessing weight of cake, Miss M. Potter; putting ring on hook, Mrs J. Newlands; putting golf ball, Mrs R. H. Gardyne; quoits, Mrs L. Charleson: throwing cones, Mrs G. Swanson; chain stepping, Miss M. Potter. On Thursday night the annual Collie Club ball was held in the Waikaka Hall when about 60 couples danced to music by Bain’s Orchestra. Mr T. Hickey and Miss D. Gutschlag led off the grand march and an enjoyable evening was spent by all. During the evening novelty dances were held, the lucky spot waltz being won by Mr W. Thomson and Miss Dillon and the Monte Carlo waltz by Mr J. Fisken and Miss M. O’Shea. The president, Mr T. Hickey, presented the cups to the following winners:—Teacher’s Cup, Mr L. Charleson; Royal Hotel Cup, Mr P. A. Whyte; Bells, Ltd. Cup, Mr R. E. McKenzie; Johnnie Walker Cup, Mr J. Potter; Hislop Cup, Mr R. E. McKeneie. THE MARAROA CLUB. TRIALS HELD AT BURWOOD. On April 4 and 5 the Mararoa Collie Club held its annual dog trials on Mr J. S. Hazlett’s property at Burwood station. Mr Hazlett also lent the sheep used in the events. Mr J. Evans, of Scott’s Gap, acted as judge. The weather was fine and the entries good, so those present were rewarded with two days’ good entertainment. A dance was held by the club in the Burwood woolshed on the second evening. The following were the results of the various events: — MAIDEN HEADING (Local); 44points. E. Royds’ Corbie (32 points) 1 W. Beer’s Nell (311 points) 2 S. Fraser’s Tweed (31 points) 3 Also competed: T. Reidy’s Bob (30), S. McLean’s Tip (22) A. Blatch’s York (19), W. Beer’s Moss (14), A. Macdonald’s Roy (failed), E. Royds’ Corbie ran out on a righthand cast, stopping three times on the run out for directions. He headed in lmin. He was rather weak in approach and pulled a little jerkily, but held a good line and held well in the ring, finishing in 6min. W. Beers Nell ran out on a -wide right-hand cast out

of sight, coming into sight and stopping several times before heading in 2min 30sec. She started to pull nicely, but later ran off the sheep, and pulled in a zig-zag line. The sheep entered the front of the ring, but the dog was a little slack in holding. Time, smin 30sec. S. Fraser’s Tweed ran out on a wide right-hand cast, and stopped twice before heading in Imin 30sec. He pulled in a zig-zag line, and was rather slack, running off the sheep too much. He let the sheep out of the ring once, finishing in smin. HEADING AND HOLDING IN RING. (Open); 44 points. S. Fraser’s Gip (40 points) 1 T. Reidy’s Scott (39 points) 2 E. S. Fraser’s Gip ran out on a very wide right-hand cast, going out of sight and heading in Imin 45sec. She lifted nicely, and pulled steadily in a good line, entering the front of the ring and holding well. Time, smin. T. Reidy’s Scott ran out on a wide righthand cast, stopping on tne way. He headed and stopped the sheep in Imin 45sec, lifting niceiy and pulling a little off the line, the sheep entering the side c* the ring. He held well and finished in smin 30sec. E. Royds’ Nell ran out on a right-hand cast, but coming in on the cast was re-directed and went out wide, to head and stop the sheep in Imin 30sec. She lifted nicely, but let the sheep wander about the course and enter the rear of the ring. She held well and finished in 4min 30sec. MAIDEN HUNTAWAY (Local); 60 points. Time limit, 10 minutes. J. Pearson’s Maid (47 points) 1 T. Reidy’s Sharp (41 points) 2 L. Dawson’s Chum (19 points) 3 Also competed: J. Lawrance’s Nell (failed), J. Lowrance’s Brace (failed), A. Blatch’s Tim (failed), A. Smith’s Roy (failed), T. Smith’s Mac (failed), L. Smith’s Sharp (18). Maid swung the sheep about the course a good deal before getting them through the first poles. She hunted them through the second poles in a fair line. She let them a little off the course and over-slewed several times, before finally hunting through the third poles in a fair line in 9min 30sec. Sharp hunted the sheep through the first poles near one of the poles and was out of position in hunting to the second poles, but managed to get the sheep through in a good line. In hunting to the third poles the dog showed lack of force, and rung the sheep several times, failing to shift them until time was called. Chum started to hunt the sheep slightly off the line, but managed to put them through the first poles in a good line. He parked at the man and missed the second poles, finally giving up. OPEN HUNTAWAY; 60 points. Time limit, 8 minutes. T. Reidy’s Sharp (45 points) 1 L. Dawson’s Chum (42 points) 2 S. Fraser’s Hemp (40 points) 3 Also competed: F. Christie’s Sam (17), L. He was slack and out of position approaching the second poles, but got the sheep through, overslewed, and pulled the sheep across the course on the way to the third poles. He got the sheep through to complete in 6min. Chum hunted a little off the line through the first poles. He hunted on a fair line through the second poles, barking at his master a good deal. He hunted off the line, and missed the third poles. Hemp slightly overslewed and hunted through the first poles, near the top pole. He hunted on a slightly zig-zag line to the second poles, and missed the third poles altogether. CONSOLATION HUNT AND HEAD; 60 points. Time limit, 7 minutes. S.
