WAR ON CRIME

ROUND-UP IN NEW YORK.

WANTED MEN ARRESTED.

(United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) New York, January 4. Following the order of the Mayor, Major Fiorello La Guardia, to clean up the city the police staged one of the biggest “round-ups” in recent years last night and to-day when they invaded the speak-easies and gang “hideouts” and arrested 143, of whom 18 were known to be habitual criminals or fugitives long wanted for specific crimes. The precincts of the station houses were crowded, while those facing serious charges were brought to the central headquarters for questioning by the new officials. Detectives and patrolmen denied that they had been given orders to make arrests, but said they felt that under the new administration they could arrest anyone violating the law without fear of political reprisal.
