REMARKABLE WOMAN
LIFE GIVEN TO OTHERS. To honour the memory of Mrs Angelina Jurd, who has been described as “Southampton’s most remarkable woman,” and who died, recently after devoting much of her life to the service of others and to the work of the St. John Ambulance Brigade, a special service was held by local ambulance workers. Mrs Jurd, who was 79 bequeathed her body to St. Bartholomew’s .Hospital, London, for the cause of science. Her death has brought to light the interesting fact that 37 years ago, when her first husband, Mr Alfred Reeves, died, she had an elaborate red granite tombstone erected over the grave on which, following his name, was carved the inscription, “Also in loving memory of Angelina, beloved wife of Alfred Reeves, born May 12, 1854, died .” She had this inscription added in order to save her friends trouble and expense. Originally Mrs Jurd intended to be buried with her first husband, but changed her mind recently. Her second husband, Mr Thomas George Jurd, died in 1926, and was buried in the same cemetery, not 20 yards from the grave of Mr Reeves. Mrs Jurd regularly visited the cemetery and placed flowers on both graves. Coming to England from South Africa, Mrs Jurd lived for a time in Yorkshire before settling in Southampton 50 years ago. At one time she was well off, but at the end had only the old age pension to live upon.
