RIFLE SHOOTING

LOCAL ASSOCIATION ANNUAL PRIZE FIRING BEGINS RESULTS OF MATCHES Under weather conditions more favourable than have been the case for some years past, the Southland Rifle Association’s annual two-day fixture, opened at the Otatara Range yesterday. Owing to a strong north wind the competitors found it somewhat difficult to judge elevation but, on the whole, the standard of the shooting was good. The entries totalled 53, the same figure as last year, and ( representatives were present from Oamaru, Hampden, West Taieri, Kaitangata, the Dunedin Rifle Club, the Kiwi Rifle Club, Mataura, Garston. Gore, Wakatipu and the Invercargill Defence and City Guards’ Clubs. Notable absentees were Mr W. Bannerman, for many years president of the Dunedin Club, and Major P. MacKenzie. of Walter Peak, an ex-president of the Southland Rifle Association.

Before shooting commenced, the president of the association (Dr. A. F. Ritchie Crawford), after welcoming the visitors, feelingly referred to the death of the association’s first life-member, the late Mr Hugh MacKenzie, of Walter Peak, and spoke appreciatively of the valuable services performed by him and his family for rifle shooting in the Lakes District and in Southland generally. He would always be remembered by the splendid MacKenzie Shield to be competed for this afternoon. Dr. Crawford said he regretted the comparatively small number of entries, there being only 53, and also the absence from the meeting of Mr William Bannerman, president of the Dunedin Rifle Club, who had taken part in the Southland meeting for the past 40 years. Major Peter MacKenzie was also missed, especially as he had this year donated a special cup for veteran riflemen over 50 years of age, competition for which trophy had attracted a good entry. Mr H. MacKenzie, president of the Wakatipu Rifle Club, acknowledged Dr. Crawford’s reference to his late father. Sergeant-Major J. Little acted as range officer and Mr G. Boylan was in charge of the butts. The executive worked hard to make the fixture a success. Mr C. H. Cunningham, ably assisted by Mr S. J. Cunningham, carried out the secretarial duties, while Mr 11. H. Moss, as statistical officer, gave valuable assistance. An innovation this year in the excellent programme is the pairs match, for which the entries total 27.
