TENNIS

CHRISTMAS TOURNEY RESULTS OF YESTERDAY’S PLAY THE FINALS TO-DAY As on the first day, yesterday’s play in the Southland Lawn Tennis Association’s Christmas tournament produced a high standard of tennis and many good contests were witnessed in all sections. Finality was reached in the boys’ and girls’ events and the semifinal stages in the men’s and ladies’ championship events. Although the weather was again blustery it was fine throughout the day. The Waihopai courts proved to be well sheltered and the large gallery which attended was treated to some fine tennis.

Again chief interest was centred in the men’s singles championship and, as anticipated, the contests were keen and well played. G. A. Pearce, of Dunedin, who had to fight hard to stall off E. B. Macpherson’s challenge in the first round on the first day, was again extended in the second round, this time by D. S. McLeod, the consistent Gore player, who took the second set and also four games in the third. Pearce drove with vigour, but found McLeod tireless, and was called upon to draw upon all his resources to outwit him. Pearce’s smashing was good and at times gave McLeod no chance. Another good second round game was that between L. Cockcrill and A. T. Baird, both Invercargill players, who played sparkling tennis and delighted the crowd with many hard-hitting rallies. The younger player, Baird, excelled himself and ran out a good winner in straight sets. All four third round games were productive cf good tennis. The match between Dr R. Chisholm (Dunedin) and A. J. Deaker, the Invercargill champion, attracted a big gallery, and although Deaker won only eight games in the 21 pla'yed, he played solidly all through and made Chisholm give of his best. Dcaker’s service failed him in the first set and he lost it 6 —3. In the second set he led 5 —4, but could not hold his opponent who drove just as strongly and ultimately won 7—5. Chisholm won by virtue of his more accurate service and superiority in the little net play witnessed. Both were steady and drove well all through. G. A. Pearce and H. J. Pollock, both of Dunedin, also had a driving duel, Pearce prevailing in straight sets. S. McDougall, the Otago champion, was well extended by A. T. Baird, who ran his more steady opponent to 7—5 in the first set and 6—4 in the second. There was more enterprise about Baird’s play, but he made the most mistakes.

J. B. Macpherson, of Foxton, ran E. G. Boddy, very close. He took the first set after 18 games had been played and shaped well in the second until Boddy got on top with accurate volleying and clever placing. Boddy was particularly deadly on anything near the net.

Chisholm, Pearce, McDougall and Boddy, four Dunedin players, are now left in the singles and on present form it would be difficult to find the winner. Their games to-day should be well worth seeing. In the men’s doubles championships Boddy and Chisholm have reached the semi-finals, defeating Baird and Lindsay in the third round after a game of brilliant yet careless tennis. Both pairs appeared to be tired (this game was played in the evening) and many mistakes were made. Lindsay and Baird led in the second set, but made the mistake of putting too much up to the net to Boddy, whose killing and angling were almost perfectly executed. McDougall and Hanan play off in the third round with Deaker and Cockerill for the honour of meeting Boddy and Chisholm in the final. The lastnamed pair combine very well and look like being hard to beat. As predicted, the ladies’ singles championship has resolved itself into a contest between Mrs Scott, of Timaru, the 1932 winner, and Mrs Hanan, of Invercargill, late of Timaru. Both have played first-class tennis to reach the final and their game to-day should be worth seeing. Mrs Scott had a fairly comfortable win over Miss Rein in the semi-final, but Mrs Hanan was extended to beat Miss Baikie, of Oamaru.

In the doubles Mrs Scott and Mrs Hanan will meet Miss Cutt and Miss Rein in the final.

The boys’ championship was decided yesterday and resulted in victory for C. Breen, who defeated C. Henry in the final after some interesting tennis. This section proved to be a very popular one and disclosed much promising talent.

The girls’ championship was won by Miss R. Wilson, who proved to be a class above the othex - girls entered. Nevertheless the section was a good one. Miss J. Lamont was the runnerup. The tourney will be concluded on the Waihopai courts to-day when all of the remaining finals will be played. Following are yesterday’s results:— MEN’S EVENTS. SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIP. Third Round. H. J.
