TOBACCO PRICES
AUTHORITY FOR FIXATION. (From Our Parliamentary Reporter.) Wellington, December 20. The long sought after authority for the fixation and maintenance of prices of tobacco, including cigars and cigarettes, is provided for in an amendment to the Finance Bill introduced into the House.
This is made possible by excluding these goods from the schedule of the Commercial Trusts Act 1910. The Industries and Commerce Committee of the House which considered the representations on the subject suggested this exclusion, provided manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers would enter into an agreement to safeguard the consumers. The view of the committee was that if tobacco were removed from the schedule, it would pave the way for negotiations for an agreement with the parties concerned. As the law stands it is impossible for manufacturers to fix and maintain the resale prices of their goods. The Minister of Finance in reply to a question .said that if there was any attempt to exploit the public, the Government would not hesitate to take action under the Board of Trade Act.
