The late Mrs W. Templeton. The funeral of the late Mrs W. Templeton which took place on Friday, was largely attended, many coming long distances to pay their last mark of. respect to the departed. The services were conducted by the Rev. A. Macfarlane. Mrs Templeton was a daughter of the late Mr T. Dawson, of Wyndham, at which place she was married. Shortly afterwards the couple removed south her husband acquiring in the Thombury district a farm which was conducted for some years. Disposing of the property Mr Templeton went in for flax-milling and acquiring the mill at the beach, the family removed to Riverton and have resided here for several years. Although of a quiet, retiring disposition, she was well and widely known in the district, and was beloved by a large circle of friends for her kindness and hospitality. She was a strong supporter of the Presbyterian Church and was always ready to assist those in distress Deceased, who was 67 years of age, leaves a husband, five sons and five daughters. Christmas Cheer.

With the object of cheering up the ‘ homes of the relief workers during the festive season, the Welfare Society ..nd sympathizers are making a special effort to collect the necessary foodstuffs and toys, and it is to be hoped that residents will give every assistance for this deserving appeal. Gifts may be left at Mr T. Borland’s and Miss McNaughton’s shops.

Methodist Church.

The Rev. F. O. Prosser, in his report to the congregation over the balance the budget campaign, said the thanks of the church were due to those who had so willingly responded to the appeal to overtake the debit on the circuit fund. When the annual appeal was made the debit at the end of September was estimated at £6O, but when accounts were completed, these showed a deficiency of £7O. It is pleasing to report that the sum of £6O has been raised, and church members are profoundly grateful to those who have opened their homes, organized social evenings, and also to those who had so splendidly supported the various efforts.

Horticultural Society.

At the annual meeting of the local Horticultural Society it was decided to hold the annual show and exhibition some time in February, the date to be selected by the committee. It is two years now since a show was held, the executive being of the opinion that owing to the depression it was inadvisable to carry on. The society, however, is in a good position financially, having £ll5 in hand. A strong committee was appointed. Hoodlumism. Some strong comments were made by members of the Progressive League when the secretary reported that the large shelter shed on the north beach had been seriously damaged by acts of the vandal element. This locality has been an expensive one to the league, for a few weeks back, the building and appointments came under the notice of these hoodlums and the repairs cost a fair sum. Mention was also mode of damage done to property at The Rocks, and members were surprised at the action of these individuals who appeared to delight in destroying and defiling town belongings, instead of doing their best to see them protected, and to be used only for the purpose for which they were erected. Accident at Sports. A painful accident happened to Mrs J. Martin, of Hekeia, on Saturday. Whilst taking part in one of the running events at the sports she fell or tripped, breaking a small bone in her leg. Medical aid was summoned and the sufferer attended to.
