BALFOUR NEWS

ANGLICAN LADIES’ GUILD. Members of the St. Alban’s Ladies’ Guild met at the residence of Mrs T. Slocoriibe on Wednesday evening, Mrs M. McDonald presiding. Mrs Grant handed to the treasurer a donation of £1 from Mrs Marshall. It was decided that same be placed in the Savings Bank and Mrs Marshall be forwarded a letter of thanks. Members are working hard at present preparing articles for a bazaar. A very dainty cushion has been presented by Mrs McTaggart. Owing to the holidays the next meeting will not be held until the last Wednesday in January 1934, at the residence of Mrs McTaggart.

Longridgc Village School Picnic.

The annual picnic of the Longridge Village School was held in the school grounds on Saturday afternoon. Races and games were arranged for young and old. Some of the results were: Married men’s race: A. Orr 1, E. R. Brain 2. Married ladies’ race: Mrs A. Orr 1, Mrs Nichol 2. Three-legged race: Misses Daly and Davis 1, Messrs J. Daly and Brain 2. Junior pupils: W. Daly 1, R. Orr 2. Junior girls: M. Orr 1, K. Nichol 2. Ladies’ high jump: Miss K. Davis 1, Mrs Brain 2. Long distance race: J. Daly 1, P. Daly 2. Relay race: J. Daly’s team and A. Orr’s team tied. In the evening a card tourney was held in the school, the winners being: Miss Nichol and Mr J. McCartney 1; Miss McCartney and Mr A. Stewart consolation.

After supper had been partaken of Mr Brain, the teacher, thanked the parents and others who came along to the functions and helped to make them successful. The speaker also congratulated Miss Sylvia McCartney on having passed her Proficiency examination, and concluded by wishing all the compliments of the season. Misses J. and R. Wilson and Mr G. D. Bruce, Balfour, and Miss M. Paterson, Wendonside, travelled to Winton on Saturday and took part in the Awarua—Wallace tennis match for the Hamilton Shield. The Wallace repre-

sentatives defeated Awarua by 21 to 3, thereby becoming the holders of the Shield for one year. The trophy was brought to Balfour on Saturday evening and will be held in the northern district for three months.
