SCHOOL CONCERT.

The annual Convent School’s concert was held in the Town Hall on Friday evening before a large audience. 'lue entertainment was of a particularly high standard. At the conclusion of the concert the Rev. Father Fenton paid a tribute to the Sisters of Mercy who had spared no effort in presenting such a capital programme. He also thanked those present for their attendance and for the fine hearing accorded the young performers. The items were as follows:— Chorus, Wreys Bush girls; pianoforte duet, Melrose Shedden and Dorothea Somerville; action song, daffodils, Nightcaps infants; drill display, Nightcaps girls; action song, “The Coffee Stall,” Wreys Bush seniors; the Band, Nightcaps juniors; pianoforte duet, Nan Fahey and Anna O’Connor; chorus. Kerry Dance. Wreys Bush girls; recitation, Peggy Ryan; action song, Nightcaps girls; pianoforte duet, Dempsey Magee and Lindsay Erasmuson; action song and dance, Wreys Bush girls; chorus, Nightcaps pupils; pianoforte trio, Joan Kerr, Teresa Fahey and Kathleen Quelch; Irish Jig, Kevin Egan; recitation, Teresa O’Connor; cantata, Wreys Bush pupils; chorus, combined Convent pupils. The accompanists were Misses Nora O’Connor (Wreys Bush) and Kathleen Egan (Nightcaps).

Pantry Evening. Miss Mabel Rushton was the guest ot honour at a pantry evening held last week at the home of Mr and Mrs E. Mason. A card tournament proved very enjoyable, those present including: Mesdames Mason, McCoy, Pointon, Mcßae, Paul, Misses Rushton (2), Mason, Egan, Spence, Dockerty, Brazier, Grant (2), Carmody, Gazzard, Excell, Purdue, Cook, Fraser, Currie, Barr. Garden Party. On Saturday afternoon the Misses Stella Purdue and Jean Irwin were hostesses at an enjoyable garden party given in honour of Miss Mabel Rushton, whose marriage takes place shortly. A putting competition and miniature golf produced keen and interesting competition, the winners being Mesdames Thos. Thomson and J. B. McLeod. Consolation prizes were won by Miss S. Purdue and Mrs J. Lobb Tables were set on the lawn and a delightful afternoon tea was partaken of in the pleasant shade of the trees. At a convenient interlude a number of varied gifts were presented to Miss Rushton who briefly returned thanks. Those present were: Mesdames Rushton, Oliff, Excell, Cook, P. Grant, D. Spowart, Thos. Thomson, J. B. McLeod, J. B. Johnston, J. J. Johnston, Burgess, Mason, J. B. Grant, J. H. Grant, J. Spowart, Callow, Lobb, Pointon,_ Snedden; Misses S. Purdue, J. Irwin, M. Rushton, H. Mason, K. Tocker, Invercargill, was the guest of Rev. and Mrs T. Campbell during last week. Mrs Rankin, Invercargill, was a week-end visitor to Nightcaps as the guest of her mother, Mrs T. Hood. Whippet Racing. The Nightcaps Whippet Club held a meeting at Oreti on Saturday under ideal weather conditions. There was a fair attendance present who were treated to some interesting racing with several close finishes. The track was in good order and provided fast going, a programme of five events decided. With Mr A. Prendeville in charge the club executive were untiring and the racing was carried out expeditiously.
