DAMAGES AWARDED

ACTION FOR SLANDER. (Per United Press Association.) Wellington, November 30. Damages amounting to £l5 and costs were awarded by Mr Stillwell, S.M., to-day against J. T. Owen in a slander action brought by T. H. Johnston. The plaintiff alleged that defendant had used the following words in the hearing of the public on September 5: “I see they put you in gaol for stealing fruit —that’s where they ought to keep you,” when the plaintiff had not been in gaol. Another man with the same name had been before the Court for stealing fruit from an auction mart.
