COLAC BAY NOTES

GROPER DERBY. (From Our Correspondent.) The local Groper Derby which is keenly contested by the local fishermen was won this year by Mr J. Coulston with Mr Kelland of Tihaka a close second. Both these fishermen were in the same boat and returned to Colac on Sunday morning with four large groper. Longwood Annual Sports. At the meeting of the committee of the Longwood Sports body it was decided to hold the second annual meeting on Saturday, December 16. The events are as follows: 12-inch Underhand Chop.; 12-inch Standing Chop; 15-inch Underhand chop; and 13-inch Double-handed Sawing. All are sweepstake events. Other events include running and cycle races. On Wednesday the local Girl Guide Company celebrated their third birthday party. The candles on Brownies’ cake and on the Guide cake were lit by Guide Joan Waldron, the oldest Guide of the Riverton Company, who were the guests of the Colac Company. The Guide cake was cut by the Commissioner, Mrs Waldron of Riverton, the Brownie cake by Guide Betty Waldron of Riverton. The evening -was spent in games, competitions and dancing, muisc for the latter being supplied by Mr E. Shore. Guide Joan Waldron played a pianoforte solo while Mrs E. Shore favoured the company with a song. Tire winners of the various competitions were: Monte Carlo, Guide Patterson and partner; lucky spot one step, Guide Dent and partner; lucky spot waltz, Guide J. Waldron and partner; guessing competition, Mrs Sullivan; thread the needle race, Guide J. Waldron and partner; putting the eye in the pig. Guide D. Dent. The demand for cottages, rooms, etc. for the summer holidays is very good this year and anyone with cottages, etc. to rent, have had no trouble in letting them.

Several good catches of groper have been reported during the week, a'so good catches of cod have been obtained. Several good catches of flounders have also been secured.
