BLUFF NOTES

(From Our Correspondent.)

Mr Norman Bradshaw has returned from Wellington where he was the guest of Dr. and Mrs O’Regan. The latter was formerly Miss Rena Bradshaw, of Bluff. Mr W. Sargeant returned on Tuesday night from a visit to Otaki, North Island, where he spent a holiday with Mr and Mrs C. J. Pilcher, ex-residents of Bluff. Among others known at the port who were seen on his trip by Mr Sargeant was the Rev. Moses Ayrton, previously Methodist minister at Bluff, but now of Otaki parish. St. John Ambulance. Early in the week a combined meeting of ladies and gentlemen was held at Bluff for the purpose of considering the formation of a division of the St. John Ambulance Brigade and also a nursing division. Mr H. H. Moss presided over an excellent attendance and introduced the District Superintendent, Mr Bell, officer in charge, and Mr J. Wyatt, Invercargill Divisional Superintendent, who both addressed the gathering. Mr Bell outlined the working of the St, John Ambulance Brigade from its beginning in a very interesting manner, while Mr Wyatt emphasized the necessity of having a nursing division in the town and the benefits arising therefrom. Both expressed the hope that the divisions would be formed. It was unanimously decided to start nursing and Ambulance Brigade divisions and to ask Dr. A. A. Stewart to be divisional surgeon. Mr Bell then appointed the following officers: Mrs J. Robertson, superintendent of nursing division; Mr L. Mowat (Greenhills), superintendent of ambulance division; Mr E. White, ambulance officer. On the motion of Mrs Robertson votes of thanks to Messrs Bell and Wyatt and to the chairman were carried in the usual mariner. A meeting of men was afterwards held for the purpose of electing officers for the ambulance division. The following were elected: President, Mr H. H. Moss; vice-president, Mr M. Hutton; secretary, Mr A. Wixon. Social Evening, After band practice on Tuesday evening a pleasant little function took place in the bandroom when Mr T. Breayley invited his felow-members to partake of refreshments in celebration of his marriage, which event took place recently. The hon. secretary of the band, Mr W. T. Walker, who presided at the function, spoke eulogistically of Mr Breayley’s many good qualities as bandsman and citizen and in congratulating him on the step he had taken wished him and Mrs Breayley, on behalf of the band, a long and happy married life. The speaker then proposed the toast of “The Bride and Groom.” This was drunk with musical honours, Mr Breayley suitably responding. During the evening a number of musical items were given, those contributing being: Messrs E. Bigwood, R. Ashwell, J. Johnstone (cornet solos), T. Denny (baritone solo), J. Kelly (euphonium solos), R. Ashwell and A. Valentine (trombone solos), P. Crawford (8.8. flat solo). An enjoyable function concluded with “Auld Lang Syne” and the National Anthem, Gun Club.

Following its usual practice the Bluff Clay Bird Gun Club has decided to hold a “Christmas shoot” on its grounds at Green Point. This will take place on Wednesday, December 6. The shoot will be for club members only and will consist of four events, the chief of which will be the president’s handicap for trophies donated by Mr G. V. Edge (president of the club). The other matches will be for prizes in keeping with the festive season and in each case these will be a ham, cake, pudding and supply of tinned fruit for the first four places. A successful outing is anticipated. Euchre. The final session for the year of the weekly euchre tournaments in aid of the Dominican. Convent funds was held in Mr H. W.
