PROMINENT GOLFERS
PLAYERS OF OTHER GAMES. Among the competitors at the New Zealand golf championships at Titirangi there were many who haa played a prominent part in other sports prior to taking up golf seriously. Names very familar in the cricket world were those of D. C. Collins and E. O. Hales. Collins gained his “blue at Cambridge University and, on returning to the Dominion, represented Wellington, and played for the North Island against the South in 1922. He led the New Zealand team in the Test matches against Maclaren’s English eleven m 1923. He also captained New Zealand against New South Wales in 1924. Hales was a Wellington representative for several seasons, and played for the North Island against the South in 1904. Rugby footballers were worthily represented by two former All Blacks A. L. McLean and F. W. Lucas. McLean played against the Springboks in 1921, and against New South Wales in 1923. Lucas holds the very fine record of having .worn the All Black jersey in the years 1923-24-25-28-30. He toured Great Britain, France and Canada in 1924 and South Africa in 1928. , n , E. L. Bartlcet is the well-known exAuckland and New Zealand lawn tennis champion, who claims an excellen. record in the summer game. Among the golf players themselves mention should be made of A. D. b. Duncan, who first won the amateur championship as far back as 1899, and his name appears on the honours list 10 times all told. Kapi Tareha is a regular attender at New Zealand championship meetings. His father Kurepo Tareha, won the championship in 1903, but his son has not yet achieved that distinction. A. Barnes-Graham, of Gisborne, is a brother of Miss BarnesGraham, who won the Auckland ladies provincial title this year.
