Animals
One summer day, a happy time I spent beside the sea, Where everything was joyful and as pleasant as could be. Among the many things I did, upon the beach so wide, I tried to find some fun in taking my first donkey ride. I sat upon the saddle and I said to Ned, “Get up,” One ear turned back towards me like a funny sort of cup. His feet still rested firmly on the shining sand below, And all my words and coaxing wouldn’t make that donkey go. My friends came round to help me with a lot of good advice; They said things to that donkey that were anything but nice. A man came up and touched him with a stick he had in hand, The donkey shook his shaggy head and lay down in the sand. “As stubborn as a donkey,” I have often heard it said; I wonder what the thoughts were, that he carried in his head. I tasted lots of pleasures at the beautiful seaside, But I am still without this one: a joyous donkey-ride. —3 marks to Cousin Margaret Jellyman (13), Queen street, Otautau.
