Reflections of a Puppy

I'm a happy little puppy, full of frolic and of fun, But so far someone’s growled at me for everything I’ve done. I try so hard to please them, but as far as I can see, They don’t appreciate one bit, a clever pup like me. Just the other day I scratched and tore a lovely great big hole, The best place you could wish for, for a gambol and a roll; But just as I had finished, someone said: “Oh, drat that pup, He has scratched up all my flower seeds, you will have to chain him up.” Then one day I found a slipper, it had such a lovely smell, I had only eaten half of it, when I heard a dreadful yell; A man came running out, and by the look upon his face, I thought it would be wiser if I found a safer place. Then the day I chased the chickens, I was growled at just the same, The fun had only started, it was such a lovely game, The chickens squawked and fluttered, as they flapped their wings with glee, Then someone interfered again, and started chasing me! Oh! it’s hard to be a puppy, for whatever thing I do Just seems to anger someone, and get me in trouble too; But still I must do something, I am very sure of that. I’ll see if it will please them if I chase that horrid cat! —3 marks to Cousin Connie Jellyman (14), Queen street, Otautau.
