Interesting Mannequin Parade

Ladies who are interested in fashion have had a delightful time this week, H. and J. Smith’s having put on one of the most successful mannequin parades Invercargill has been privileged to sec. The Country Club looked charming on Tuesday afternoon-the opening day of the paraoe —and a dais, on which stood a huge 1933 fashion “book,” had been erected at one end of the room. A dainty attendant turned the pages of this “book” from which stepped mannequins wearing all the very latest in summer styles. Sports wear, coats, afternoon and dinner frocks, and night attire were shown to the large and appreciative audience and Miss Sarah Aitken described each creation as it appeared. During the afternoon, Miss Jopp sang two songs and some little pupils of Miss Rene Ward danced a little fairy play. Of the sports frocks, I was particularly attracted by two hiking suits—one in brown and orange with long trousers and a beret to match the colours, and the other a cotton suit of duck with shorts. Another frock vzas in diagonal rayon and cut, as. is so necessary these days, on the bias. I also noticed another rayon frock in multi-coloured diamond check effect with collar and sleeves of organdie. The new lantern sleeves were shown ir. a novel frock of uncrushable pique voile trimmed with organdie. Tennis enthusiasts will be thrilled this season with the new double spun silk which is so admirably suited for tennis wear and I noticed a frock of this material with smart red and white trimming. With regard to the coats, the check coats were a feature and oatmeal shade predominated. I liked a smart swagger coat in wine shade which was made in the new crow’s feet checked design and one of Donegal tweed with the sleeves cut on raglan lines. Zips, as all followers of fashion know, are the very latest these days and one smart coat was of beautifully tailored Saxony tweed with leather trimming and pockets with zip fasteners. A point to be remembered this season is the threeway collar which adds so much smartness to a coat. Silk coats are still popular for summer wear. and I saw some most desirable ones. The afternoon frocks showed how important the cut is these days and slimming lines were shown to advantage in a delightful grey afternoon frock. I also noticed a charming blue phantom crepe frock with leg-of-mut-ton sleeves, and another one in art marocain in large coin spot design with a detachable cape. It is impossible to enumerate all the creations I saw, but I must mention a dashing model in black and white, in which the exclusive note was depicted in the angel skin lace treatment.

The hats throughout were charming and there is no doubt that the angle of one’s hat will have much to do with the smartness of one’s appearance this season.

At the last performance, the bridal group was much admired. The wedding frock was of white satin cut on long, tight-fitting lines, with lace insets, back and front, and a long flowing train. The sleeves were puffed. The bridesmaids’ frocks were blue and

pink organdie—one of blue organdie with pink finishings and a frilled blue cape edged with pink, and the other of pink organdie with azalea finishings and a cape of richelieu pattern. Huge picture-hats of azalia pink braid crinoline were worn. The management are to be congratulated on the success of the parade.
