ANGLING

GORE DISTRICT SOCIETY. ANNUAL REPORT. The annual report of the Gore District Angling Society states:—The past season, taken all round, was quite favourable from an angler’s point of view. All the district streams were in good order for fly fishing for the major part of the season, excepting the Otamete and Waimea, which were very low at one period. Early in the season a deputation from the society visited the sluicing claims in the Northern District to see if anything could be done to minimize the pollution of the Waikaia and Mataura rivers by sludge waters from the claims. As a result the Mataura river was in very fair order for fishing for a good period. Three competitions for the Roche Cun, a novice and an open event were held during the season. There was keen competition in all events, the results on the whole comparing favourably with past seasons, two competitions in particular being particularly good. The following were the prizewinners in the various events: No. 1 Roche Cun F. Hoffman 1, L. Craig 2, No. 2 Roche Cup—F. Hoffman 1, H. B. Clifford 2, No. 3 Roche Cup—H. B. Clifford 1. J. Ferris 2. Novice Competition—D. Latham 1, A. Ferguson 2. Open competition—F. Hoffman 1, H. Halliday 2. Mr Hoffman was the winner of the Roche Cup for the season with q total weight of 491 b 4oz. H. B. Clifford being runner-up with 381 b 4oz. During the year an eeling drive was held and close on 3000 eels were taken out of our local streams and lagoons. The quadrangular shield competition, which was controlled by your club this season, was held in December on the Mataura river. Mataura and Wyndham failed to put in a team, and your club was successful in winning the shield from the Southland team. Gore secured 45 fish weighing 501 b. and Invercargill 25 fish weighing 301 b Boz.

The committee desires to thank all officers and members of the society and donors of prizes for the sunport accorded during the year, also the Press and the Southland Acclimatization Society for the courteous attention given to any suggestions or requests made bv our club.

The financial position shows a credit balance corresponding favourably with previous years.
