ENGLAND’S TEST TEAM

A. W. CARR'S SELECTION. LARWOOD v. BRADMAN. London, September 15. Expressing high hopes that Larwood will be available next season, A. W. Carr says in the Daily Sketch that the fight for the Ashes will centre on him and Bradman. The success of either will decide the issue, says Carr. He picks the following team for the first Test: Sutcliffe, Walters, Hammond, Leyland, Jardine (captain), Ames, James Langridge, Voce, Robins, Larwood and Bowes, and Verity (12th). He considers that Voce’s inclusion will be entirely dependent on Larwood’s fitness. If Larwood is not available, Clark and Allen should replace them. Voce is 100 per cent, more effective when Larwood is playing. All the first eight of the above team exceeded 1000 runs this season. Walters is preferable to Bakewell as partner to Sutcliffe, because he is the sounder player. Langridge is the best allrounder of the year, and displaces Wyatt. Bowes is the best new-ball bowler in England, and is included as the third fast bowler. Robins, as googly bowler, brilliant field and useful bat, cannot be improved upon.
